Forever War Movie

Forever War MovieLooks like there's going to be a 3D live-action movie adaptation of the Forever War in a not too distant future. Director Ridley Scott announced indeed in October 2008 that he would adapt the novel into a film:

"I first pursued Forever War 25 years ago, and the book has only grown more timely and relevant since. It's a science-fiction epic, a bit of 'The Odyssey' by way of Blade Runner, built upon a brilliant, disorienting premise."
Director Ridley Scott

And a few days ago Author Joe Haldeman confirmed the project by announcing that Scriptwriter David Peoples (who penned the screenplay of Blade Runner and Twelve Monkeys) has been hired to write the script of the Foreverer War movie.

"I'm not among the people who assume that the novel will be desecrated by the movie. It will be interesting to see somebody else's take on it.
Incidentally, I wasn't asked to submit a screenplay, though I've been a member of the Writers Guild for almost thirty years and have solid production credits. No surprise. They don't want the book's author saying 'Hold it! I wrote the book, and that's not the way it goes'."
Author Joe Haldeman

For those who are not familiar with the Forever War, it is a science fiction novel by Joe Haldeman. It was first published in 1974. Forever War follows the interstellar war between humans and an enigmatic race known as the Taurans. Forcefully recruited into battle, Private William Mandella struggles with the inhumanity of war in addition to an even more complicated factor: time dilation in space travel the speed of light. Unfortunately for the human forces, 10 years at war has averaged to be seven centuries on Earth.

The TV series "Space: Above and Beyond" was loosely based on the Forever War and it was rather great. So I'm glad to hear about this Forever War movie. Let's hope the film will be faithful to the novel.
